What is Additive Manufacturing Training for Dental Technician Apprentices?
Additive manufacturing training for dental technician apprentices is hands-on education that teaches how to design, produce and post-process parts using industrial 3D printing technologies such as metal 3D printing.
This type of training focuses on real production workflows, enabling apprentices to move beyond theory and gain practical experience with modern manufacturing processes.
Additive Manufacturing Training for Dental Technician Apprentices
On March 17, 2026, we at form3D conducted a pilot workshop in collaboration with the Gewerblich-Industrielles Bildungszentrum Zug (GIBZ) and 10 dental technician apprentices in their final year.
The goal was simple: deliver additive manufacturing training for dental technician apprentices that combines theory with hands-on experience in metal 3D printing.
The result?
High engagement
Rapid understanding
Immediate connection between theory and practice
Why Additive Manufacturing Training Matters
Additive manufacturing (AM) is no longer limited to prototyping. It is now widely used in:
production
product development
dental applications
As a result, additive manufacturing training is becoming a core requirement for future engineers and dental technicians.
Apprentices with early exposure to metal 3D printing training gain a clear advantage in the job market and are better prepared for modern manufacturing environments.
From Theory to Hands-On Experience
Many technical schools still focus heavily on theory. However, hands-on experience is what truly enables understanding.
This is why additive manufacturing training dental technician apprentices must include real applications — not just concepts.
Hands-on Metal 3D Printing Training: Inside the Workshop
During this additive manufacturing training for dental technician apprentices, participants explored:
fundamental AM principles
real industrial and dental use cases
the workflow from digital design to finished parts
how a metal 3D printer works in practice
In collaboration with Swiss m4m Center and a-metal, apprentices worked with an industrial metal 3D printing system and experienced real production processes.
Key Hands-on Activities
The most impactful part of the training was direct interaction with the process:
apprentices unpacked a real metal 3D print job
they sieved metal powder and learned safe material handling
they refilled processed powder into cartridges
they post-processed their own 3D printed dental model castings
These steps provided a complete understanding of the additive manufacturing workflow.
What Students Learn from Additive Manufacturing Training
The key insight: Hands-on additive manufacturing training significantly accelerates learning
We observed that apprentices:
understand complex workflows faster
gain confidence through real tasks
connect theory and practice immediately
Working on real parts — especially unpacking prints and post-processing components — creates a much deeper understanding than classroom teaching alone.
Preparing the Next Generation of Dental Technicians
In the dental sector, additive manufacturing is rapidly becoming a standard technology.
Through additive manufacturing training for dental technician apprentices, students learn how to:
apply 3D printing in real workflows
understand material behavior
prepare parts for production
complete post-processing steps
This prepares them for modern dental production environments.
Outlook: Expanding Additive Manufacturing Training
Following the success of this pilot, we are already planning further additive manufacturing training programs.
Our goal is to make metal 3D printing training accessible to more students and apprentices and support the next generation of skilled professionals.
